Portia Lee James DeGeneres (also also known as Portia de Rossi) is a popular Australian as well as an American model, actress, and philanthropist. At the age of 15 she legally changed her name by adopting her Italian name "de Rossi" which was glamorous. The name she chose was "Portia" to reference Shakespeare's performance of The Merchant of Venice. Portia thinks that this was the most courageous thing she's done in her life and claimed that the desire to change her name was caused by her own struggle with her sexual identity. Portia made her debut in the film industry with a romantic comedy drama called 'Sirens', in which she starred alongside Hugh Grant. She also appeared in several American films and television shows like Too Something, Nick Freno, Licensed Teacher, Arrested Development, as well as, Better Off Ted. She became famous for her role in the role of a Boston-based lawyer who was named Nelle Porter in a television comedy show called Ally McBeal. Her character played the lead character in the show's comic relief.
